Is inflammation bad or good? Here is what you probably don't know.

Is inflammation a bad thing?

Inflammation is not always a bad thing. It’s a normal part of how our immune system responds to internal and external triggers.

When is inflammation good?

When you graze your knee, it can be quite painful. Sometimes, it may even swell up and get hot and red.  This acute inflammation is a good thing - the body recognises the damage and sends in help to start the repair process.  Within a few days, the cut scabs up and the body turns off the inflammatory response.

When does inflammation become bad?

When it doesn't shut off!  Or if the response is turned on inappropriately.

Chronic inflammation burns on and on and often goes beyond the original site to other areas of the body, affecting the whole system. And this low-grade chronic inflammation can manifest as several different chronic diseases.

In fact, 75% to 90% of human disease is related to stress and inflammation, including cardiovascular and metabolic diseases and neurodegenerative disorders.

What triggers bad inflammation?

There are several factors that cause our immune system to be triggered in this way but one of the factors and one that we have the most control over is WHAT WE EAT.
