Is what You’re Eating Making you Ill? A Functional Medicine Doctor Speaks

Is what you're eating making you ill?

What most people think it’s about:

When most people hear this, they might relate it to someone with a peanut allergy accidentally eating nuts and getting a huge allergic reaction. Or to someone eating spoilt food and getting food poisoning. Or to someone with undiagnosed coeliac disease eating bread or pasta and feeling unwell.

What it’s really about: the perspective of functional and lifestyle medicine

But do you know what you put in your mouth can contribute to so many more illnesses? For instance:

  • Eating lots of salty foods can drive your blood pressure up

  • Saturated fats in fried foods can clog up your arteries and over time, you could develop angina or even have a heart attack or a stroke?

But even more insidious, sugar can cause chronic inflammation in your body, like a smoldering fire. In your gut, this inflammation can make your gut lining become leaky which then allows partially digested food, toxins and bacteria into the bloodstream. This results in a  further cascade of the immune system reactions in different parts of the body and can manifest as irritable bowel syndrome, joint and muscle pains, autoimmune conditions and even mental ill-health.

Expert tip: Improve your health by making better choices

But here’s the good news:  just like what you eat can make you sick, making better choices about what you eat can improve your health now and in the future.

In fact, some people have found that their chronic symptoms like joint pain, brain fog, bloating, and tiredness can reduce dramatically just by changing what they eat. I certainly found that to be true for me.
